Description
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a widely used, evidence-based form of psychotherapy or talk therapy. It focuses on addressing and modifying dysfunctional thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to alleviate psychological distress and improve overall mental health.
CBT operates on the premise that our thoughts, feelings, and actions are interconnected. It aims to help individuals identify negative or distorted thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to their problems. Then, through various techniques and strategies, CBT helps individuals reframe those thoughts, develop healthier thinking patterns, and adopt more constructive behaviors.
CBT has been found effective in treating various mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders (such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders, substance abuse, and more.
It is usually time-limited and structured, focusing on specific issues or problems. CBT can be delivered in individual therapy sessions, group settings, or even through self-help resources, and its techniques are often adapted and integrated into other therapeutic approaches to suit individual needs.
