Description
The MidAmerican Energy RecPlex is a state-of-the-art facility in West Des Moines. Athletes and healthcare providers from around the community will have a chance to utilize the space. In an emergency, our goal is to optimize outcomes and streamline care by solidifying an emergency action plan. The course will improve the knowledge and skill set of medical professionals, students, athletes, weekend warriors, parents, and active adults. In addition to reinforcing the importance of interprofessional collaboration amount first responders.
Physicians, nurses, athletic trainers, EMT’s, and paramedics will collaborate and discuss current literature and recommendations for spinal motion restriction, especially for emergencies on the ice. Further discussions will include equipment management, transportation of minors, pain management strategies, and primary and secondary assessments.
Educational Need
Concussion education is still widely needed throughout the community. 3.8 million sports-related concussions are diagnosed annually in the United States; however, it is estimated that 50% of mild traumatic brain injuries are reported. (Broglio et al 2017; Iverson et al. 2017). Sport-related spine injuries can be devastating. Unfortunately, Spinal motion restriction is needed occasionally in athletics, especially in hockey and football. The goal will be to establish safe and efficient spinal motion restriction techniques while on land and the ice, with special considerations for equipment removal, minors, and injury prevention. There are numerous ways to perform spinal motion restriction, we will discuss which maneuvers are superior to others and the implications for each.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss the current research and practices for selective spinal motion restriction.
- Apply the most appropriate WDM EMS protocols (specifically: A2, F4, F6, G46, G43, and A5) to manage various simulated patients with sports-related injuries.
- Coordinate a simulated patient's response, care, and safe extrication with a team of varying expertise and specialized equipment.
- Discuss the procedures for obtaining consent to transport minor patients with parents on or off-site.
