Purpose

We all hold unconscious beliefs or implicit biases about various social identities. As we collectively work to improve race relations, address injustices, and equip ourselves to move closer toward an anti-racist society, implicit bias training is a tool that will empower us with the necessary skills, education, knowledge, and ability to contribute to understanding one another.

Description

This presentation will include tips and advice on topics regarding sex, gender, and sexuality and how they impact our implicit biases when caring for LGBTQI+ patients. This presentation will focus on equipping future healthcare providers with awareness, education, and advice on communication and practices integral to providing welcoming and affirming care for patients identifying as LGBTQ+.

Learning Objectives

  • Define key terminology relevant to LGBTQ+ healthcare.
  • Discuss strategies to build rapport when providing affirmative and inclusive care for LGBTQ+ patients.
  • Outline effective approaches for obtaining a medical/sexual history from LGBTQ+ patients.
