Purpose

Mary Greeley Medical Center Grand Rounds is a multi-disciplinary clinical activity that maintains, develops, or increases the knowledge, skills, and professional performance and relationships that a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession.

Target Audience

Physicians, Advance Practice Professionals, Nurses, Ancillary Staff, Medical Students (Rotating), Non-Medical Students (Rotating), and Healthcare Administrators.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify new and emerging drugs of abuse and describe their clinical effects, how they are obtained, how they are used, toxicity, detection methods, and legal considerations.
  2. Recognize the factors that increase the risk of drug overdose deaths linked to the illicit use of counterfeit pills and heroin containing fentanyl or other synthetic opioids.
  3. Describe the approach taken by toxicologists/poison centers toward the management of overdose and drug toxicity.

Speaker

Linda Kalin, RN, BS, CSPI
Executive Director, Iowa Poison Control

Linda Kalin is the Executive Director of the Iowa Poison Control Center. She has over 25 years of experience in clinical toxicology and poison center activities. Linda began her career as an emergency room nurse and in 1989 became Iowa’s first Certified Specialist in Poison Information.  She was instrumental in the development of the statewide poison control center established in 2000. She is an adjunct faculty member and preceptor for the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and Drake College of Pharmacy and was awarded Preceptor of the Year by both universities. Linda has held leadership and service positions in many national and local professional organizations and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Poison Control Centers. She is a frequent lecturer and speaker on topics involving drugs of abuse and general poison management. Linda has been honored as one of 100 Great Iowa Nurses for 2012.
