Purpose

Mary Greeley Medical Center Grand Rounds is a multi-disciplinary clinical activity that maintains, develops, or increases the knowledge, skills, professional performance, and relationships a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession.

Target Audience

Physicians, Advance Practice Providers, Nurses, Medical students (rotating), Non-medical students (rotating), and healthcare administrators.

Description

This activity describes the regulatory guidance, indications, contraindications, best practice in usage of prescribing and managing opioids and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in the management of their patients.

Learning Objectives

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of how to access and utilize CDC recommendations for clinicians providing pain care, including those prescribing opioids.
  2. Outline the history of the opioid crisis in the United States.
  3. Define measures to individualize pain management for a specific patient’s pain type and anticipated duration.
  4. Identify common signs of opioid use disorder, OUD.
