Course Description
This brief course examines the fundamentals of academic advising and recommendations for the unique environment at Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences (DMU). Advising students requires conceptual, informational, and relational skills. Completing this course provides DMU academic advisors with the foundational knowledge to address these skills in their ongoing professional development.
Course Goals
- Recall academic advising roles and responsibilities.
- Identify how to build connections with advisees.
- Successfully navigate common academic and nonacademic challenges students at DMU may face, given a set of scenarios.
Instructional Methods
This online course introduces some basic concepts and provides prompts for reflection. Various text and multimedia resources have been used, and interactivity was added where possible and appropriate.
Learners should note how the scenarios provided relate to their experience as they complete the course. The course is not meant to be comprehensive. Ongoing professional development, such as having a mentor and attending group discussions, is recommended for new advisors.
