Educational Need

Emergency department clinicians frequently encounter patients with acute psychiatric symptoms, yet many report limited training in rapidly recognizing high-risk presentations such as suicidality, mania, and psychosis. Gaps also exist in applying efficient assessment strategies, verbal de-escalation techniques, and appropriate legal processes, including Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) requirements, when managing psychiatric emergencies.

Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize high-risk psychiatric presentations in the emergency department that require immediate intervention, including suicidality, mania, and psychosis.
  2. Apply brief assessment strategies and verbal de-escalation techniques to manage acute behavioral crises.
  3. Navigate the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act requirements and legal considerations when evaluating and stabilizing psychiatric emergencies.
  4. Differentiate between suicidal behavior and non-suicidal self-injury and implement appropriate safety planning and follow-up care.
  5. Identify medical mimickers for acute psychiatric presentations.
