Donation 101: It Starts With You

Purpose

Mary Greeley Medical Center Grand Rounds is a multidisciplinary clinical activity that maintains, develops, or increases a physician's knowledge, skills, professional performance, and relationships to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession.

Target Audience

Physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, medical students (rotating), non-medical students (rotating), and healthcare administrators.

Learning Objectives

  1. Summarize your healthcare organization's regulatory responsibility related to the donation process.
  2. Review when and how to make a referral to the Iowa Donor Network and the importance of doing so.
  3. List the eligibility criteria for both cardiac and imminent deaths, to refer the patient to the Iowa Donor Network.
  4. Differentiate between Donation by Neurological Determination of Death (DNDD or Brain Death) and Donation after Circulatory Determination of Death (DCDD), including which organs can be recovered and transplanted in each scenario.
  5. Provide examples of common donor management techniques.
  6. Explain which tissues can be donated for transplantation and how these gifts impact the recipients.
  7. Summarize Iowa Donor Network's role in supporting families during and after the donation process.
