Healthy Birth Day, Inc.'s mission is to save babies using the evidence-based Count the Kicks stillbirth prevention campaign. Count the Kicks educates expectant parents on tracking their babies’ movements in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy. We have a mission to keep lowering our state’s stillbirth rate by focusing on reducing racial disparities that persist in birth outcomes; we do this by educating and empowering expectant parents to learn the method for tracking fetal movement and to advocate for their babies if they notice a change.

This CME activity aims to train healthcare professionals to talk to their patients about fetal monitoring and use best practices to track fetal monitoring. By using evidence-based and non-invasive tools, providers can help prevent stillbirths.

Educational Need

23,500 babies are stillborn every year in the United States – that’s 65 babies a day – yet stillbirth has remained in the dark. It is time to shine a light on this tragedy and share evidence-based prevention methods preventing stillbirths. Research has shown that tracking fetal movement during the third trimester can help prevent stillbirths. We need to ensure providers are aware of the research and evidence-based practices of how expectant parents can track fetal movement.

There is also a strong connection between stillbirth and maternal mortality – we can help bridge the gap between patient and maternal care provider and save thousands of lives. The disparities that exist and persist around stillbirth are unacceptable. We want to get to a point where race is no longer a predictor of stillbirth and to do that, we need to address this head-on. Black women are two times more likely to experience a stillbirth than white women –we will build in an equity and inclusion module with this training for providers.

Another key component is the latest research and evidence on preventing preventable stillbirths – we now have that. We will be providing recent data and research on the evidence of our program. 

In Iowa, where the campaign started, the stillbirth rate has dropped nearly 32% in 10 years! If this success is replicated in all 50 states, over 7,500 babies will be saved every year!


  • Demonstrate how to implement Count the Kicks into their own practice with the goal of improving birth outcomes.
  • Utilize the free kick counting tools and resources available to them.
  • Describe the powerful stories of what happens when expectant parents, particularly at-risk populations, learn to track fetal movement and how they can use that knowledge to help save babies.
  • Recognize and reflect on their own implicit biases and how biases and racism has shaped maternal healthcare and demonstrate ways to counter implicit biases in their own lives.

Megan Aucutt

Megan Aucutt joined Healthy Birth Day, Inc. and Count the Kicks as the Associate Director of Programs in July 2019. Megan is a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa with a Bachelor’s Degree in History and an emphasis in Global Health. She has over 10 years experience with non profits and governmental work; with a focus on grant writing and reviewing, coalition building and educational program development.  Her true passion is maternal and child health; during her time at Iowa Department of Public Health she created a toolkit for Head Start organizations on implementing a cessation protocol. Megan believes that knowledge truly is power, she used the Count the Kicks App during her pregnancies and has three healthy and rambunctious children. She is proud to be part of such an important organization with a powerful mission of saving babies.
