Almost 75% of prescription drug overdose deaths are caused by prescription opioids, more than cocaine and heroin combined.

As a prescriber, do you know the best strategy for prescribing opioids? Practicing physicians often struggle to manage their patients’ pain. Extended-release (ER) and long-acting (LA) opioids are a valuable element of the pain management plan for some patients. Unfortunately, the misuse and abuse of ER/LA opioids have resulted in a serious public health crisis of addiction, overdose, and death. Clinicians must play a role in prevention. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has announced a risk evaluation and mitigation strategy (REMS) for ER/LA opioid products.
