Target Audience
Healthcare professionals who work in Rheumatology.
Educational Need
Rheumatology workforce shortages are complex and include training, recruiting, optimizing rheumatology practice(s) and a multidisciplinary healthcare network. Recent analysis of addressing these issues requires an understanding of strategies that can be applied to a community and/or a regional practice. ACR Workforce solutions address a multipronged approach to rheumatology workforce shortages.
Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic, progressive, and potentially disabling condition that affects approximately 30% of all patients with psoriasis and approximately 1% of the US population.
There is a growing variety of available treatments for these patients, creating a complex treatment decision landscape. Rheumatologists need to know the background of the epidemiology and heterogeneous manifestations of disease as well as current and upcoming treatment options.
Axial Spondylodyloarthritis affects nearly 4.8 million Americans, is thought of as painful and incurable, and, without therapy, is often deforming and disabling. It is associated with early mortality (HR 1.6 for patients with AS), and it is expensive — both as a system (10-fold higher median health care cost in AS vs. matched controls) and as an individual (with work withdrawal at 3x the general population.
There is a growing variety of available treatments for these patients, creating a complex treatment decision landscape. Rheumatologists need to know the background of the epidemiology and heterogeneous manifestations of disease as well as current and upcoming treatment options.
Rheumatologists need an overview of the application of ultrasound for the evaluation and diagnosis of a variety of rheumatologic conditions, including osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis including RA and PsA (synovitis, tenosynovitis, enthesitis, erosions), as well as crystalline arthropathies.
The practice of rheumatology is increasingly impacted by various state and federal regulations and management processes by multiple insurance companies and pharmacy benefit management systems. We, as practicing rheumatologists, need to keep up to date on this ever-changing climate and to be involved with advocacy for our patients and practices at all levels.

It is estimated that there are 91 million Americans with rheumatic disease. By 2030, the demand for adult and pediatric rheumatology care will exceed supply by 100%. These shortages already negatively affect timely access to care and quality of care for rheumatology patients.

Bakewell, MD, RhMSUS Ultrasound is a valuable tool for visualizing a wide range of structures and aspects related to inflammatory arthritis, offering highly detailed images of tendons, entheses, ligaments, synovial recesses, skin, and nails. Power Doppler and color flow Doppler enhance the capability to detect heightened vascularity in soft tissues, providing insight into inflammation and potential future damage, all without the need for contrast agents. The dynamic nature of ultrasound examinations allows for the flexible imaging of tendons and the scanning of peripheral joints from various angles. Ultrasound is a cost-effective procedure that can be conveniently performed at the bedside. In line with current European League Against Rheumatism recommendations, incorporating ultrasound into assessing chronic arthritis is endorsed to enhance diagnostic precision and optimize overall management.

Catherine J. Bakewell, MD
Intermountain Medical Group, Salt Lake City, UT
Dr. Bakewell trained at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she obtained her MD, Residency, and Fellowship certifications. She practiced for two years in Seattle with Dr. Philip Mease at Seattle Rheumatology Associates, simultaneously remaining faculty for UW at the VA Medical Center Puget Sound, where she introduced musculoskeletal ultrasound to the fellowship training curriculum. She currently practices at Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City, Utah. She has been nominated to membership in GRAPPA (Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis), SPARTAN (Spondyloarthritis Treatment and Research Network), PACMAN (Psoriasis and
Psoriatic Arthritis Clinics Multicenter Advancement Network), National Psoriasis Foundation among others, and most recently was nominated to the Board of Directors for AWIR (Association of Women in Rheumatology), in addition to being her local chapter lead for Utah. She remains active in research (including NIH-funded) in musculoskeletal ultrasound. For over a decade, she has been an active mentor for USSONAR (Ultrasound School for North American Rheumatologists). In 2023, she was elected to the board of directors for this organization as well. She is currently serving as co-lead for the ACR Guidance for the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound in Inflammatory Arthritis and
continues to teach/lecture nationally.
Daniel F. Battafarano, DO, MACP, MACR
Uniformed Services University, San Antonio, TX
Dr. Battafarano graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1983. He completed an Internal Medicine Residency at Brooke Army Medical Center, followed by internal medicine practice in Nuremberg, Germany, for 3 years. Doctor Battafarano completed an Adult Rheumatology Fellowship at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, CO, affiliated with the University of Colorado, under Colonel Sterling West in 1992. He is an adjunct professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health-San Antonio and a Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
Dr. Battafarano served 36 years of total U.S. government service, 21 years on active duty with the U.S. Army, retiring as Colonel, and 15 years as civilian Chairman and Professor of Medicine for the Rheumatology Division at San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC). He has served in multiple graduate medical education (GME) leadership roles, including the rheumatology fellowship's program director and research director. His clinical research has focused primarily on RA, drug side effects, GME, and the rheumatology workforce. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, nonindexed publications, and indexed abstracts. Four (4) of his fellows were recognized with the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Distinguished Fellow Awards. Dr. Battafarano practiced rheumatology part-time with CommuniCare Health Centers in San Antonio, seeing underserved patients from 2019 to 2022. He
continues rheumatology teaching, volunteer medical/mission activities, and writing humanities essays.
Dr. Battafarano currently serves as Chair of the ACR Workforce Solutions Committee and previously served on the ACR Board of Directors and as Co-Chair of the 2015 ACR Workforce Study. He has been recognized with numerous teaching awards, including Best Doctors in America, The Legion of Merit Medal, Master of the American College of Physicians (MACP), and Master of the American College of Rheumatology (MACR).
Michael S. Brooks, MD, FACP, FACR
UnityPoint Health, Cedar Rapids, IA
Dr. Brooks attended medical school at Loyola University Stitch School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency at Loyola University Affiliated Hospitals. He completed his fellowship in rheumatology at Indiana University
School of Medicine.

Thomas Schmidt, MD

Dr. Schmidt received a BA in Kinesiology from University of Colorado at Boulder (2002) and received his MD from University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine (2009).
Hanna Zembrzuska, MD, MME
University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA
Dr. Zembrzuska is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa in the Division of Immunology-Rheumatology. She received her undergraduate degree from Loyola University in Chicago and her MD from Rush Medical College. She completed her internal medicine and psychiatry residency at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and performed a fellowship in rheumatology at the University of Iowa. Her research focuses on bringing new treatment options to rheumatology patients through industry-sponsored clinical trials.
