Purpose

NAMI Provider is a staff development program for professionals who work directly with people experiencing mental illness. The program emphasizes the importance of understanding the unique challenges faced by people with mental health conditions, such as social isolation, complex family dynamics, and the unpredictability of illness. The program offers the tools professionals need to combine models of care to serve their clients and families of clients best. It's designed to help enhance professionals' relationships with the person in their care and their family.

The mission of NAMI Provider is to increase the understanding of the challenges people with mental health conditions face by educating professionals in building relationships with clients and their families to provide comprehensive care.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the traumatic impact of mental illness on the person and the family, even in times of wellness.
  • View lived experience as an important perspective that enhances the care health care professionals provide.
  • Discuss the collaborative model of care and how to incorporate it into their treatment services.
  • List the emotional stages of response to mental illness experienced by the individual and their family.
  • Identify why healthcare professionals may want to refer families and caregivers to NAMI programs.

Educational Need

NAMI Provider addresses a professional practice gap in developing better ways to deliver care to patients with mental health conditions. Evidence-based practice supports involving patients and their families in the decision-making process for treatment plans. As identified by the Iowa Health and Human Services Department, practitioners within Iowa's mental and behavioral health facilities require additional education on the best tools and skills for working alongside patients. NAMI Provider will provide educational tools on engaging patients to be active in their treatment planning to allow for better care delivery.

An additional professional gap identified by the Iowa Health and Human Services Department with state facilities is understanding the challenges patients with mental health conditions and their families endure. NAMI Provider addresses this gap by presenting unique stories from those who have endured challenges from mental health conditions. Having an additional understanding of mental health conditions assists with empathy building, allowing for compassionate relationships with patients to be formed for the best care.
