PURPOSE

Every year, the MercyOne Katzmann Breast Center Iowa and the MercyOne Richard Deming Cancer Center present a breast cancer symposium intended for all healthcare professionals and individuals interested in the care of patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. The 2024 theme is The Personality of Breast Cancer. Up-to-date information is provided by providers active in caring for breast cancer patients.

Target Audience

This program is intended for all healthcare professionals and individuals interested in the ongoing care and concerns of patients who have survived breast cancer. Breast cancer survivors are encouraged to attend.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss ways breast cancer care can be impacted by health equity/inequity.
  2. Compare differences in breast cancer outcomes in people experiencing healthcare inequity.
  3. Describe the use of Mammaprint in predicting the reoccurrence risk of patients with breast cancer.
  4. Explain the role of the breast imaging navigator.
  5. Explain the role of the breast cancer nurse navigator.

    Abby M. Gonik, MD

    Dr. Gonik graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Biology. She earned her medical degree from the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After medical school, Dr. Gonik completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Abington Memorial Hospital and her fellowship in Gynecological Oncology at the University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California.

    Christian Schultheis, MD
    Oncologist/Hematologist, Mission Cancer + Blood

    Dr. Schultheis graduated from Loras College with a BS in Biology research and a minor in Biochemistry. He went to the American University of the Caribbean Medical School, followed by an Internal Medicine residency at the University of Oklahoma in Tulsa, Oklahoma, from 1997-2000 and a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO, from 2000-2003. He joined Mission Cancer + Blood in August 2017. He worked at the Medical Associates Clinic in Dubuque, Iowa, from 2003 to 2017.

    Trish Steenhoek, RT (R)(M) CN-BI
    Breast Imaging Navigator, MercyOne Imaging Center

    When patients are called back for additional images or testing after an abnormal mammogram, Trish steps in to help the patient navigate through the process. She provides initial support by coordinating imaging, biopsies, or other procedures. She also helps arrange transportation to get patients to and from appointments and financial assistance and connects patients with additional resources as needed. 

    Katlyn Wood, BSN, RN
    Breast Cancer Nurse Navigator, MercyOne Katzmann Breast Care

    As a breast health navigator, Katlyn ensures breast cancer patients receive the best care based on their needs. As the term navigator suggests, her primary responsibility is to help patients “navigate” the health care system throughout their illness. She is available to educate and support patients and provide practical assistance in eliminating certain barriers, such as transportation or financial concerns. Katlyn serves as a point of contact for patients. She collaborates with other care providers to ensure our patients can access various cancer care services at Mercy and within the community. Before becoming the breast health navigator, Katlyn spent 6.5 years as a cancer and oncology nurse.

    • MD: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Iowa Medical Society (IMS) through the joint providership of Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences (DMU) and MercyOne Comfort Health for Women. DMU is accredited by IMS to provide continuing medical education for physicians. DMU designates this live activity for a maximum of 5.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
