Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the core functions of the Iowa Poison Control Centers and how physicians can effectively utilize these services in the evaluation and management of patients with suspected toxic exposures.
  2. Identify common clinical presentations, risks, and management considerations associated with newer and emerging substances of abuse, including kratom and synthetic cannabinoids
  3. Apply recommendations to clinical decision-making for patients with suspected toxic exposures.

Speaker

Joshua Trebach, MD, FAACT
Medical Toxicologist, Emergency Medicine Physician, Iowa Poison Control Center

Dr. Trebach is a medical toxicologist and emergency physician at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC). He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at UIHC and is the Associate Medical Director at the Iowa Poison Control Center. Dr. Trebach received his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed his residency in emergency medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Trebach completed his medical toxicology fellowship training at New York University/New York City Poison Control Center. Dr. Trebach’s interests include medical education, public health, clinical research, disaster preparedness, plants/mushrooms, and all things toxicology!
