Prerequisites and Required Pre-Course Preparation Work

FM I and PNF I. Prior to the classroom portion of this course, all students must complete required course preparation. The preparation may include reading, video and quizzes. Plan to spend approximately 1.5 hours learning this important information.

Course Overview

This course will train the participant to evaluate and treat mechanical, neuromuscular and motor control dysfunctions of the upper trunk including rib cage, thoracic spine, cervical spine, sub cranial region, cranium and TMJ.

This approach, developed and taught by Gregory S. Johnson, PT, FFFMT, FAAOMPT and faculty, presents the dynamic principles and procedures of Functional MobilizationTM as an evaluation and treatment component of the Functional Manual Therapy® treatment model. Functional MobilizationTM couples active and resisted movement (PNF) with soft tissue and joint mobilization to facilitate normalization of mechanical, neuromuscular, and motor control dysfunctions. The participant is trained to evaluate each movement segment through the use of PNF patterns and to combine the selective pattern into the full trunk and extremity patterns. Instruction will emphasize the treatment of both hypomobile structures and the stabilization of hypermobile segments with prolonged holds to promote activation of the core muscle’s contraction.

  • Apply specific Functional Mobilization™ progression strategies to enhance functional efficiency of the upper trunk.
  • Acquire specific FMT™ assessment and treatment strategies for the cranium, TMJ, sub-cranial region, cervical spine, thoracic cage, vestibular, inter-oral, larynx, and vagus nerve.
  • Develop an appropriate home program for identified dysfunctions.
  • Develop treatment strategies for upper trunk dysfunctions related to voice, breathing, pain, and posture.
  • Analyze current literature relevant to the FMUT material.

Required Equipment

  • Half Foam Roll. 12" x 6" which measures 3" tall at the apex since the 6" round is cut in half.
  • 8 ft Mobilization Belt. 1.5" x 8' mobilization belt.

Christopher DeMarco DPT, CFMT, FAAOMPT

Christopher received his Clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Creighton University in 1997 and was certified as an athletic trainer in 1994. He has continued his education with the Institute of Physical Art, and received a post-graduate certification in Orthopedic Manual Therapy (CFMT). Christopher has been providing physical therapy in the orthopedic setting, and a member of the American Physical Therapy Association since 1996. Through his dedication and continuing education, he strives to provide the best care to his patients and help facilitate them to optimal function.

Matt Thomason is a native of South Carolina, where he graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor's degree in Financial Management prior to completing coursework at the Medical University of South Carolina, where he earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. After finishing at MUSC, he moved to New York to practice for one year while his wife was completing her education as a physical therapist. While there, he was introduced to the Institute of Physical Art (IPA) and their philosophy of Functional Manual Therapy. After taking several continuing education courses from them, Matt and his wife moved to South Carolina so that he could train under Tim Crunk, PT, DPT, MS, OCS, CFMT, FAAOMPT as a part of the IPA Orthopaedic Functional Manual Therapy Residency for two years. After completing this residency, Matt became a Board Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist in physical therapy by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. He then went on to successfully pass a rigorous examination process to become a Certified Functional Manual Therapist (through the IPA), and passed with distinction (less than thirty physical therapists in the nation have this distinction). Matt and his wife then moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado so that he could complete a one-year fellowship under the direction of Gregory Johnson, PT, FFCFMT, FAAOMPT and Brent Yamashita PT, FFMT, FAAOMPT. After completing his fellowship, Matt was recognized as a Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists, a high honor in the world of manual physical therapy. In addition to practicing physical therapy, Dr. Thomason travels the country to teach continuing education with Comprehensive Manual Therapy Seminars and the Institute of Physical Art.
