Target Audience

All healthcare professionals are invited to attend.

Purpose

The robust demand for mental health services has grown steadily and outpaced the supply of psychiatrists. Non-psychiatric clinicians are increasingly filling that void and providing vital mental health care in many settings, including primary care clinics, hospitals, and community health centers. This conference will provide additional support to these clinicians so that they are better prepared to meet the mental health needs of their patient populations.

Autumn Brunia, DO

Cassandra Lai, DO

Violence, vicarious trauma, and burnout are becoming all too common in healthcare - but they don’t have to be inevitable. In this talk, we will dive into the daily silent struggles primary care providers face. From managing agitated patients to preventing emotional exhaustion, this session blends real stories, actionable tools, and evidence-based strategies to help you protect your peace, set boundaries, and stay resilient, without going numb. This talk is for you, whether you’ve felt unsafe, unseen, or just flat-out overwhelmed.

  1. Identify early warning signs of patient agitation and describe appropriate de-escalation strategies for use in a primary care setting.
  2. Define vicarious trauma and identify symptoms commonly experienced by providers exposed to repeated patient trauma.
  3. Discuss data-driven vicarious trauma protective practices that can be implemented into a busy weekly routine.
