Emergency ultrasound enables physicians to make rapid decisions, identify life-threatening conditions, and expedite the management of critical patients. Additionally, the length of stay in the emergency department dramatically decreases with the use of ultrasound, subsequently increasing patient satisfaction while maintaining an even higher standard of care. Its use extends beyond emergency providers and can improve patient outcomes in a multitude of settings. (Michalke, 2012)

Purpose

This workshop gives the practicing emergency provider current information and hands-on training to improve image acquisition and interpretation of point of care ultrasound. Practicing emergency ultrasound experts will provide presentations on each topic. This will be followed by small group breakout sessions where participants scan live models. Each small group will have an expert facilitator to ensure individualized attention and teaching that fits each participant's needs and skill level.

Topics

The theme for this workshop is ultrasound for critical patients and will include the following topics and more!

  • Cardiac Ultrasound and Inferior Vena Cava
  • Gallbladder Ultrasound
  • Ultrasound "Grab Bag”
    • Ultrasound-guided line placements
    • Eye exams (e.g., retina and optic nerve)

Learning Objectives

  • Identify relevant anatomy with ultrasound.
  • Describe safety measures and interventions for point-of-care ultrasound in emergency medicine.
  • Evaluate technical processes to perform gall bladder, basic cardiac, pulmonary, RUSH, and eFAST exams.
  • Compare typical findings in normal and pathologic states.

COVID-19 Safety Measures

Coming together safely for the Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Workshop is our #1 priority.

We recognize the unique and changing impact of the pandemic on our organizations, families, and daily lives. As the world begins to return to normal and we return to in-person activities, the health and well-being of our attendees remains our top priority. By working closely with Des Moines University leadership and federal, state, and local public health officials, we will incorporate current best practices to provide you with the best level of protection at the workshop.

The expectation is that we will all practice protocols that reflect a spirit of respect and care for our healthcare community throughout the activity. The COVID-19 safety measures in place for this workshop are described below.

  • Health screening protocol when checking in at the registration desk.
  • Masks required in all indoor spaces.
  • Disposable masks and hand sanitizer available at each ultrasound station and throughout the lecture space.
  • Lecture space and ultrasound stations set up to accommodate 6-foot social distancing between tables.
