Educational Need

According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, 2017 was Iowa's highest year for opioid deaths, up nearly 900% from 2000. The good news is that the number of deaths involving opioids from January to August of 2018 has fallen 35% from 2017. However, there is still much work to be done.

Objectives

  • Discuss the recent history of narcotic use in the United States.
  • Construct a mental model for compassionate care and solution-focused treatment of opioid abusers.
  • Identify treatment options for opioid addicted persons.
  • Discuss the point-of-view of addicted persons and their caregivers in providing patient-centered care.

Des Moines University is located on a 22-acre campus in the heart of Des Moines, Iowa. Just west of downtown on Grand Avenue, the University is located in one of Des Moines' most prestigious neighborhoods. The campus is in a historic neighborhood filled with tree-lined streets and gracious older homes and businesses. Its central location makes it easy to access the rest of the city and outlying communities. The campus is close to the Des Moines International Airport, located on the bus line and just blocks from local shopping and downtown Des Moines.

Biography

Peter Komendowski
President and Executive Director, The Partnership for a Drug Free Iowa

Mr. Komendowski has over 12 years of experience managing a task force made up of substance abuse prevention, public safety, public policy, public health, health care, education and business interests focused on identifying and mitigating the factors influencing youth high-risk behavior. He has most recently been heavily involved in media, community outreach and educational forums focused on the epidemiology of the opioid crisis and community health improvement initiatives.
