Target Audience

Healthcare providers.

Purpose

Nutrition plays a vital role in health and wellness. This course will help the learner recognize the role food plays in lifestyle-related disease. In lifestyle medicine, the practitioner must move beyond diets and work to change behaviors through medical nutrition counseling. A special focus will be on nutritional prescriptions that will inspire clients to change food consumption habits to improve the human experience.

Learning Objectives

  1. Summarize current American dietary guidelines.
  2. Differentiate science-based recommendations.
  3. Describe the role and implications of nutrition in common lifestyle-related diseases and how Lifestyle Medicine can prevent/treat/reverse common chronic diseases affecting the United States.
  4. Cite relevant nutrition studies for nutrition prescriptions.
  5. Summarize the impact of nutrition on sleep, stress, and emotional well-being. 
  6. Describe the role of epigenetics and nutrition.
  7. List key macro- and micronutrient areas where Americans get too much or are lacking. 
  8. Summarize how the physiology of diabetes is impacted by plant-based nutrition. 
  9. Differentiate nutrition in all phases of illness and health.
  10. Articulate how to make Lifestyle Medicine Nutrition Recommendations.
  11. Elaborate on how to coach a person through a nutrition prescription.

Jonathan Nix, PT, DPT, FAAOMPT, OCS, RD, CSCS
Course Author, Physical Therapist, Physical Therapy Central

Dr. Nix's passion for physical therapy began with an interest in medicine, health, and fitness. He graduated with a degree in Nutritional Science and became a licensed Registered Dietitian before pursuing his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

Dr. Nix has continued to enhance his skills with advanced training and certifications, including Orthopedic Certified Specialist (OCS) and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). He has also earned the prestigious title of Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists (FAAOMPT) after a 5-year program and training to further his specialization in orthopedics.

Jen Uschold, PT, CFMT, TPS, NBC-HWC
Program Director, Lifestyle Medicine, Evidence in Motion

Ms. Uschold graduated from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania and worked in a variety of physical therapy settings, including travel physical therapy, before focusing on outpatient care for the past 25 years. Her clinical approach has been strongly influenced by the Institute of Physical Art and Evidence In Motion, and she incorporates wellness coaching into her practice as a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach and Certified Positive Intelligence Coach.

Ms. Uschold actively teaches and serves with organizations including Rehab Connections, The Jackson Clinics, and the Institute of Physical Art, and currently serves on the Evidence In Motion (EIM) teaching team and as Program Director for the Certification in Lifestyle Medicine.
