  1. Develop a differential for the atraumatic and traumatic limping child.
  2. Utilize the physical exam, subjective data, and objective data to determine likelihood of nonoperative versus urgent operative intervention.
  3. Review literature-supported workup for a pediatric limping child.

Common Outpatient Fractures and Initial Management

  1. Identify common upper and lower extremity pediatric fractures with typical physical exam findings and radiographic features.
  2. Review how to appropriately immobilize different fracture patterns.
  3. Review how to manage minor fractures and how to determine when a referral to a pediatric orthopedic surgeon is necessary.
  4. Discuss how to counsel families regarding the likely timeframe for fracture healing and return to activity.

Stephen Carveth, MD
Orthopedic Surgeon, Iowa Ortho

Dr. Carveth is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon with specialized training in the field. He completed his pediatric orthopedic surgery fellowship at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, California. Prior to his fellowship, Dr. Carveth earned his medical degree from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine in Rochester, Michigan. During his time there, he served as president of the Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Interest Group. He was also a proud member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society.

Dr. Carveth has published several peer-reviewed research projects on pediatric orthopedic topics, contributing valuable knowledge to the field.

Sarah Kehoe, PA-C
Physician Assistant, Iowa Ortho

Ms. Kehoe is a physician assistant specializing in pediatric orthopedic care. A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Ms. Kehoe attended Des Moines University, where she received her medical education and training.

Ms. Kehoe chose to pursue a career in orthopedics because of the field’s opportunity to make a tangible difference in patients’ lives. She is passionate about helping individuals improve their quality of life and regain functionality, whether through treating acute injuries or managing painful conditions. Ms. Kehoe values the hands-on nature of orthopedics, allowing her to work closely with patients on their path to recovery.

In her approach to patient care, Ms. Kehoe emphasizes clear communication and shared decision-making. She believes in taking the time to thoroughly explain injuries and conditions, ensuring that patients have a full understanding of their options so they can make informed decisions
