Medicare, Medicaid, and Healthcare Funding Issues
Purpose
Mary Greeley Medical Center Grand Rounds is a multidisciplinary clinical activity that maintains, develops, or increases a physician's knowledge, skills, professional performance, and relationships to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession.
Target Audience
Physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, medical students (rotating), non-medical students (rotating), and healthcare administrators.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss how the latest Medicaid cuts will affect patients and providers.
- Identify how many Americans depend on Medicaid and Medicare.
- Review how Medicare and Medicaid are funded by federal and state taxes.

Michael Kitchell, MD
Neurologist, Emeritus Staff, Mary Greeley Medical Center
Dr. Michael Kitchell is a retired neurologist from McFarland Clinic in Ames, IA. He is currently part of the Mary Greeley Medical Center's Emeritus Staff. Dr. Kitchell completed his internship in Internal Medicine and residency in Neurology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in 1979 after graduating from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in 1975. He served as president of the Iowa Medical Society in 2009-2010 and as board president of the McFarland Clinic from 1999-2016.

- DO: Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences (DMU) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. DMU designates this activity for a maximum of 1.0 AOA Category 2-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician’s participation in this activity.
