Purpose

Mary Greeley Medical Center Grand Rounds is a multi-disciplinary clinical activity that maintains, develops, or increases the knowledge, skills, professional performance, and relationships a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public, or the profession.

Learning Objectives

  1. Educate on the existence and prevalence of human trafficking in Iowa.
  2. Describe how human trafficking affects the healthcare system. 
  3. Identify how to spot the signs of human trafficking.

Speakers

Greg Hall
Investigator, Midwest Regional Center

Mr. Hall was born and raised in Iowa City, Iowa, and after high school, he attended and graduated from Upper Iowa University with a Bachelor of Science degree. Following college, Hall began his career as a Certified Law Enforcement Officer in Iowa, working as a criminal investigator for Municipal, County, and State Agencies, having over 16 years of law enforcement experience. Some of Hall’s assignments included Crime Scene Investigator, S.W.A.T. team member, and Detective Bureau. Hall worked as the Violence Against Women (VAWA) investigator and lead sex crimes investigator for the University of Iowa’s Department of Public Safety. He was also instrumental in creating the department’s Crime Scene Unit, where Hall served as its lead and continues to assist the department on major crime scenes. Hall worked as a member of several task forces, including one specifically targeting large human trafficking rings. Hall also worked with the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) taskforce, where he conducted online investigations into child sex crimes and child pornography crimes.

After retiring from law enforcement, he was asked to work as an investigator and training instructor for Hope for Justice, a Non-Governmental Organization that investigates Human Trafficking and provides training to police and civilian entities throughout the United States and the World.

David Gonzalez
Senior Investigator, Midwest Regional Center

Mr. Gonzalez began his career as a peace officer in Iowa City, Iowa, and for the Iowa City Police Department in 1996. He began working on white-collar crime. Moved to sex crimes (adult and children). Moved to crimes against persons, then violent crimes. They moved to major crimes (this included high-profile crimes), which took him to China, where he worked a homicide. While performing this work, he also took on cold-case homicides. While working on cold case homicides, he traveled the US investigating these types of cases from NY to Seattle to Mississippi to Minnesota and everywhere in between.

Mr. Gonzalez began working on major crimes and cold case homicides and added human sex/labor trafficking investigations along with becoming a certified police polygraph examiner. Led his team (which included federal law enforcement, state law enforcement, and local law enforcement) in human sex/labor trafficking investigations encompassing many states within the US. Successfully investigated and prosecuted many sex traffickers and helped our victims/survivors of human trafficking.

He would routinely receive calls for help from many law enforcement agencies (local, state, and federal) on difficult investigations regarding murders, human trafficking (both labor and sex), and major crimes. Conducts many training sessions for local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies throughout the US, covering many topics, including human sex/labor trafficking.

Received twice by the Governor of Iowa award for his work in Human Trafficking. Received many awards (including human trafficking) from the US Attorney’s Office and federal government. Two-time awardee of the “Officer of the Year”. Retired from law enforcement on the 25th of May 2021. Began at Hope for Justice on the 1st of June 2021. After retiring from law enforcement, he was asked to work as a senior investigator at Midwest Region for Hope for Justice, a Non-Governmental Organization that investigates Human Trafficking and provides training to police and civilian entities throughout the United States and the World.
