Classes are not scheduled so all students and faculty can attend and participate.
- Recognize the research efforts of those at Des Moines University and in the surrounding medical and scientific communities.
- Provide a forum for the collaboration of ideas and the production of new hypotheses
- Demonstrate to attendees the critical role that research plays in the advancements of health care.
All students and faculty are encouraged to develop research projects to be presented at the Symposium. Awards will be given to the presenting author(s) (students, residents, and postdocs only) with the best quality oral and poster presentation.
DMU faculty, staff, students, residents, alumni, external researchers and health professionals from the Des Moines area and surrounding medical and scientific community are invited to participate and present. All students, faculty, and residents are encouraged to develop research projects to be presented at the Symposium.
Posters will be available online starting Tuesday, December 1.
This year's poster presentations will be pre-recorded and available for viewing online. Those chosen to present a poster will be asked to submit a digital copy of their poster and a 2-3 minute “elevator talk” about their project to the DMU Office of Research by Friday, November 13. Presenters will be judged on both the poster and their talk.
If the work is co-authored, only the PRESENTING author will submit on behalf of all co-authors. The names of all co-authors must be listed in the submission form. Prizes will be awarded to the winning presenting author(s) (students, residents, and postdocs only).

- Posters will be constructed in PowerPoint.
- ALL poster presenters will record a 2-3 minute elevator talk video using a screen capture and recording software such as Panopto or PowerPoint.
- No additional PowerPoint slides may be used in the elevator talk. Only the poster will be displayed.
- Poster judges will review and score both the digital poster and the elevator talk.
- Detailed instructions will be provided to poster presenters after the abstract submission deadline closes.

Posters will be available online starting Tuesday, December 1 for viewing and judging in advance of the DMU Research Symposium. There will also be poster viewing and discussion breakout sessions during the event. This will allow participants to discuss topic areas with poster presenters and other attendees.
LIGHTNING ORAL PRESENTATIONS
Six students will be selected to give a brief five-minute lightning talk. Lightning talks are limited to a maximum of eight slides, including introduction, background, methods, conclusions, references, and acknowledgements. Lightning talk presenters are NOT required to present a poster but may choose to do so.
Symposium staff will work with the selected oral presenters to record their presentation prior to the Symposium. Students will not be presenting live on December 3. More information will be provided via email to those that are selected.
If the work is co-authored, only the PRESENTING author will submit on behalf of all co-authors. The names of all co-authors must be listed in the submission form. For work with multiple authors, the authors can decide among themselves their various roles in presenting within the specified time limit.

Research abstracts must be submitted under one of the following categories:
- Biomedical Science
- Movement Science
- Public Health
All abstracts will be published in the DMU Research Symposium program. Please submit your abstract according to the following guidelines:
- Format: Microsoft Word format
- Font: Arial, 11 point
- Margins: 1 inch on all sides
- Spacing: Single-spaced
- Justification: Left
- Abstract body length: No more than 250 words
- Type the title first, using sentence casing (only first word and proper nouns capitalized)
- Italicize scientific names of organisms
- List all authors, institutional affiliations and short addresses (city and state only)
- Bold the names of the author(s) presenting the work
- Include applicable credentials for all authors, including students and mentors (e.g., DPM'24, MSA'22, DO, PhD)

Consider the following questions when preparing your abstract:
- Does the abstract clearly state the aim of the project (i.e. a research question, theoretical issue, or problem)?
- Is the significance of work clearly stated?
- If relevant, are the methods, data collection, and analysis procedures well-designed and appropriate to the question addressed?
- Are the conclusions justified in relation to the data and/or analysis/description?
- Is the abstract written clearly and organized well?
IRB OR IACUC APPROVAL
If your project involves human or animal research, you must have obtained IRB or IACUC approval, unless you are clearly presenting your work as a proposed project and make it clear that absolutely no research has yet been conducted. Posters involving such research should indicate an approval number or statement that no research has been conducted. Anyone giving an oral presentation on a project involving human or animal research must have an IRB or IACUC approval. For questions, please contact the DMU Office of Research at 515-271-1445.

S. Vincent Grasso, DO'91, MSIS, MBA
Global Practice Lead: Healthcare & Life Sciences, IPsoft
Dr. S. Vincent Grasso is the Global Practice Lead for Healthcare & Life Sciences at IPsoft, and has more than 30 years of surgical, research, consulting and community leadership experience. A graduate of St. Peter’s University (B.S.), Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Mount Sinai School of Medicine (Surgical Residency), Yale University Department of Surgery (Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Fellow), Yale University NASA Commercial Space Center for Medical Informatics and Technology Applications (Informatics Fellow), New Jersey Institute of Technology (MSIS) and University of Massachusetts Amherst (MBA), Dr. Grasso brings a uniquely-qualified skillset to all of his endeavors. In addition to being a trained physician and AI Luminary, Dr. Grasso is a chef, piano player, and, in his spare time, he volunteers serving the underprivileged at a clinic in Newark, New Jersey. To top it off, he has also traveled to Mount Everest to test medical equipment at altitude!
Dr. Grasso brings not only the necessary medical acumen and expertise to provide excellent patient-centered care, but also has an established track record of leveraging cutting-edge technology in hospital and healthcare organizations, which benefit both patient care and the business of delivering exceptional healthcare services. Dr. Grasso's current projects focus on the utilization of AI to help curb the opioid crisis, improve mobile healthcare for home visits, and assist administrators with revenue cycle management.
Dr. Grasso's presentation is not eligible for continuing education credit.
